Maybe being on television is the real drug in this case.

Amber Portwood, who is supposed to be released from jail into the care of a halfway house this week after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled substance, has considered changing her plea so that she can continue shooting “Teen Mom” as much as possible, sources exclusively tell E! News.

It’s not as if she wants to be in jail for five years, of course. Portwood’s attorney says that it’s “not true” that his client would prefer to change her plea and do jail time.

But it is true that the drug court that’s allowing Portwood to rehabilitate at the halfway house has ordered the facility not to allow a camera crew inside, and we hear that’s got the single mom on edge.

Per the drug court’s terms, Portwood must spend eight months rehabbing at Sister 2 Sister Ministries in Anderson, Ind., and, once she moves out, get a real full-time job–i.e. one that doesn’t involve reality-show cameras. The judge has warned her that if she violates her strict probation in any way, she’ll be locked up — and she’s facing a maximum of five years in prison on the felony drug-possession charge.

The third season of “Teen Mom” is scheduled to premiere April 3. Portwood hasn’t been filmed for the show since around Thanksgiving time. She has been in custody since before Christmas.

Portwood said in court last week that she had been under the impression that she would be allowed to live with her grandparents — i.e., tape her show — while fulfilling the terms of her sentence (counseling, regular check-ins with the court, etc.), so being ordered to a halfway house caught her by surprise.

A source close to her confirms that the court has been in touch with MTV about what is expected of Portwood over the next year and that the network is being cooperative — which, according to the insider, is freaking Portwood out because the show has been her sole source of income and most of her savings have gone to legal fees.

Amber decided Saturday that she would rather “do her time now and get it out of the way,” the source said. The halfway house is “not the right place for her. She’d have a 10 p.m. curfew and would never see Leah because she wouldn’t want to bring Leah around that place.”

Baby daddy Gary Shirley currently has primary custody of the child.

“The system doesn’t want Amber to succeed,” the source said. “She needs to stay in the entertainment industry. There are no jobs in Anderson. She needs to finish her schooling. She can’t do all of that with a $7-an-hour job.”

By agreeing to the drug court program, Portwood had her case effectively removed from Madison County Circuit Court.

A court clerk confirmed to E! News last week that Portwood was sentenced to at least 18 months — and a maximum of three years — in the program and would have to appear at a drug court hearing every week. The Circuit Court would not have to see her again unless “she messes up again,” the clerk said.

Matthew Inglis, Tony Croft, Janette Matthews, of the Mathematics Education Centre, Loughborough University, have submitted the following as an interim report for their project ?Views of graduates on the HE curriculum?.

The goal of this project is to conduct a survey of recent mathematics graduates to determine their views on the higher education curriculum, with particular reference to its utility in the job market.

We planned to conduct the study along similar lines to earlier HEA surveys which focused on physics and chemistry. The researchers who conducted these surveys used a combination of telephone and post to contact their respondents. Following various discussions with colleagues with greater experience in conducting large scale surveys, we modified our plans, and opted to use an entirely electronic method (emails and a web-based survey).

In terms of question content, we designed the survey to be broadly comparable to both the HEA physics and chemistry surveys, and the MoreMathsGrads project?s survey of incoming undergraduates. Consequently we hope to be able to compare the types of skills that incoming undergraduates expected to develop with the types of skills that they believe that they did develop. We are very grateful to the MoreMathsGrads team for sharing their raw data with us.

We contacted the Heads of Department from 68 universities (those on the UCAS list) to ask for their support in conducting the survey. 54 HoDs responded positively. We then contacted the careers centres of all 68 universities (indicating if appropriate that the survey had the support of the mathematics department). 35 careers centres agreed to assist us and disseminate our message to their graduates, 10 declined to participate, and 23 did not respond one way or the other (after reminders). After two months we contacted all 35 participating universities again asking them to send a reminder email to graduates. To date 17 have.

Currently the survey is still open (we plan to keep it open until the end of February). We currently have 434 responses, although until we analyse these data in detail it is unclear how many of these might be duplicate submissions. Nevertheless this figure compares favourably to the sample size involved in the HEA physics and chemistry surveys (139 and 196 respectively).

Data analysis and report writing is scheduled for March and April 2012.

Forget wall brackets, you can now use tape to fix a heavy television to your wall. The new adhesive, invented by Alfred Crosby and his team at University of Massachusetts Amherst, exploits the same mechanism as gecko feet, allowing it to withstand up to 300 kilograms of force on a smooth surface like glass. In this video, it successfully holds up a television weighing 18 kilograms and can be quickly removed, without leaving behind any residue, and reused.

The material was developed by analysing gecko feet and the combination of factors that contribute to its extreme clinging power. Whereas other groups have focused on mimicking tiny hairs that increase surface area contact to maximise grip, Crosby and his colleagues considered the impact of tendons, bones and skin, allowing them to come up with the first design that could be scaled up.

The device consists of a silicone adhesive pad attached to the middle of a stiff fabric “tendon”, mimicking a joint and allowing for flexibility of movement. The pad can be draped over a surface to maximise its contact area and increase its strength. Even on a vertical wall, it resists peeling off.

The team is now improving their design by studying the evolution of gecko feet, which have maintained their stickiness despite variations in anatomy. The material holds promise as a cheap and durable alternative to existing dry adhesives.
